A lavalava, derived from "ie lavalala" (wrap-around cloth), is a Samoan garment worn around the waist, fastened with a knot. Traditionally made from bark or pandanus leaves, modern versions use calico or cotton. Everyday lavalavas feature vibrant patterns, reflecting Samoan life and art.
Both males and females wear lavalavas in varying lengths for different occasions. During celebrations, the "agini" style is adopted, tucking in the sides and rear to showcase special tattoos.
